There are two kinds of foaming agents, chemical foaming agent and physical foaming agent. Chemical foaming agent is a kind of organic and inorganic substance which can be differentiated into gaseous differentiation substance (N2, CO2, NH3, etc.) under high temperature. This differentiation process is usually exothermic and irreversible. Physical foaming agent can be liquid or vaporized substance under normal conditions. Physical foaming agent includes aliphatic and hydrocarbon (pentane, hexane, decane, etc.). Chlorinated hydrocarbons (chloroform, dichloromethane, etc.). Chlorofluorocarbons (trichloromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, etc.), N2, CO2 noble gases and air.

Conventional physical foaming refers to the process of mixing the physical foaming agent and resin matrix evenly, changing the conditions in the operation process and making the foaming agent undergo physical changes according to the principle of thermodynamic instability, so as to generate bubbles.

Chemical foaming agent refers to the gas generated by thermal differentiation or chemical reaction between material components. The gases released by chemical foaming agent during heating include carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ammonia, etc.
